Milan is a very pretty Italian city and of course shopping and fashion capital. Therefore it offers plenty of photography potential. In this blog post, I’ll show you the best instagrammable places in Milan.
Duomo di Milano
It’s no surprise that this is the TOP spot in Milano and the dome truly is stunning. But that’s also the reason why the dome and especially the square in front is extremely crowded all the long all year round. But with some tricks, you can still get a great picture. Either come very early in the morning when most people are still sleeping. Or use a different angle and try to exclude the crowds from your picture. Either by letting the camera looking up so that your body covers most of the crowds. Or by a portrait shot which only shows you and the dome – and not the crowds.
Best time to go to the Duomo:
Early morning or on a rainy day.
Arco de la Pace
The city gate of Milan and start of the district Porta Sempione. This roman landmark is very impressing and offers great picture possibilities as well.
Best time to go to the Arco de la Pace:
All-day long is possible. Most people just pass this square and gate and don’t hang out there or spend a lot of time there.
Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II
When you’re in Milan, you have to go to this luxury shopping mall. It is the most impressing mall I personally have ever seen and no gallery in Paris or the shopping hallway of Marina Bay Sands in Singapore can keep up with it. Therefore this gallery is also very crowded all day long and all year round.
Best time to visit Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II:
Early in the morning for pictures. All-day long for shopping.
Canal Naviglio Grande
This beautiful canal resembles a small Venice and is perfect for a afternoon stroll, for having a coffee or for going out for a fancy dinner.
Best time to visit Naviglio Grande:
The best time to go to Naviglio Grande is the evening before sunset. If you are lucky the pink sky will dip the water of the canal and the houses in rose colors and create a truly romantic Italian atmosphere.
Turtles in Milan? Yes! In the lake of Sempione Parc from where you have a view at Sforzesco Castle. Don’t believe it? Have a look yourself!
Best time to visit Sempione Parc:
You can visit the park all day long. As it is very big, people distribute quite well in the park. Especially in spring when the cherry blossoms are making the park colorful.
This Castle is very close to Sempione Parc and if you don’t have time to enter is, you should at least pass it. There are plenty of picture opportunities in the courtyard of the castle, in front of the castle or at the fountain.
Best time to visit Sforzesco Castle:
In the early morning when it’s not full of people yet.
Brera (especially during Design week)
Brera is THE design and shopping district of Milan and also a must-go place when visiting the fashion capital of Milan. I was so lucky and could visit Milan during Design week. At that time of the year there are small exhibitions and pop-up stores in the whole Brera district but also other areas of Milan and after every corner and in every backyard will be a surprise waiting for you. The design week is not only about fashion design, but also furniture, architecture, kitchens, fabrics and so much more. Plan at least 1 or 2 afternoons during Design week to stroll through Brera
Best time to visit Brera:
During design week in April. Check for the exact dates of this year: https://www.fair-point.com/event/2020/salone-internazionale-del-mobile/
